9ct Gold vs Gold Plated - What's the Difference?

There are many different terms used to describe gold jewellery. It can quickly become confusing to know the true value of the piece you’re buying and how to take care of it. Solid gold jewellery is understood to be better quality and can last a lifetime (with the right care!). However, high-quality gold-plated jewellery can last a long time too and look just as good. Choosing the right piece for you depends on your budget and what exactly you expect from your jewellery. This guide will help you understand the difference between 9ct gold and gold-plated jewellery.

9ct Gold

9ct gold has 37.5% pure gold and is the most affordable form of pure gold jewellery. It tends to portray a light yellow colour. 9ct gold contains a mix of pure gold and other metals, achieving a perfect gold alloy. It is more durable and stronger and particularly suited to the creation of jewellery. Our 9ct gold collection has been crafted using Irish hallmarked 9ct yellow gold.

Gold Plated

Our gold-plated collection is crafted in sterling silver and coated in a thick layer of 18ct gold. This gives the jewellery a gorgeous shiny gold colour. Gold plated pieces are a more affordable alternative to solid gold.  Gold plated jewellery requires more care and maintenance in order to maintain its gold look for longer.

Some gold plated jewellery may be brass coated in gold which can tarnish quickly, shortening its lifespan. At NJO Designs we only work with premium metals - 9ct gold and sterling silver.  Find out more about our materials here.
